Honeybee!

One of my favorite places for photography is the garden.

But, anyone that’s visited my home knows that our gardens are far from beautiful.

They are overwhelming and filled with weeds.

Every year we face the problem of not knowing what to pull because we don’t know if we have a weed or a flower.

Since we know virtually nothing about gardening or plants or flowers, it’s a constant state of discovery.

As a former biology major I find it interesting.  As a photographer it’s one of my favorite places to explore.  I love to get up close and see what insects and flowers I can find amidst the jumbled mess.

(which I hope one day will not be a jumbled mess!)

One of my favorite photography subjects are insects.  This summer I’d read about the plight of the honeybee.  Then I realized that I literally hadn’t seen one in our yard all summer.

Seriously… the whole summer.

And our lawn is basically a field of clover.

I’d seen bumblebees and wasps.  But nothing small.

Until today.

Here’s a small yellow bee I photographed today with my 70-200 (so it’s cropped in WAY, WAY far).  I googled and believe it’s a honeybee.  I know I have friends out there who are bee experts so I’d love to learn more!

Why did I not see them in my yard until now?  Is that unusual?  And can anyone add anything to my identification?

I’m relieved to see we haven’t lost this important pollinator.  And now I’d like to see how close I could get with a macro lens without threatening it.

If you know something about this bee please let me know in the comments or link to a favorite web resource.
