Halloween Pennant

“Halloween Pennant”

That is the actual (common) name of this dragonfly…

I was surprised by that one!

We saw this very beautiful golden dragonfly glittering in the sun on a nature walk today with Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy at Claude Moore Visitor Center.  In the descriptions I found online it is described as orange (from which the Halloween part of its name was derived) but to us it looked a sparkling golden in the sunlight.  Even my kids commented on how it sparkled.  The descriptions said the pennant part of its name was derived from the behavior of perching atop tall grasses and plants where it waves in the wind like a pennant.  That is exactly what we observed.
