{"id":5400,"date":"2014-02-07T22:12:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-08T03:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/?p=5400"},"modified":"2014-02-07T22:13:24","modified_gmt":"2014-02-08T03:13:24","slug":"i-love-this-fabric-reupholstering-a-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/i-love-this-fabric-reupholstering-a-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"I love this fabric\u2026 reupholstering a chair."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I thought I&#8217;d share a recent project. \u00a0A simple chair update in my craft room. \u00a0Nothing earth shattering\u2026 but it makes me so happy because I LOVE this fabric.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and because I had never recovered a chair before.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and because we got our daughters using power tools.<\/p>\n<p>I love when we can get them involved with projects like this because I hope they will remember it when they are grown and feel confident that they have the skills to customize their own spaces. \u00a0I also love showing them that old things don&#8217;t need to be thrown out &#8211; they can be reused, upcycled, updated.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the &#8220;BEFORE&#8221; picture. \u00a0It&#8217;s a chair that came with a desk I got from freecycle.<\/p>\n<p>{ I. FREECYCLE! }<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5401\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2523T.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2523T.jpg 600w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2523T-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been this way for a while and, well\u2026 the fabric has seen better days (presumably before I owned it).<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago I went to the grand opening of Hobby Lobby and saw an amazing piece of fabric that I fell in love with. \u00a0I knew I had to do SOMETHING with it\u2026 but wasn&#8217;t sure what. \u00a0The walls in my craft room (which would be anyone else&#8217;s dining room) are chocolate brown and then I realized THIS was what my fabric was meant for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2636T.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lady that works at the fabric counter at Hobby Lobby was kind enough to talk me through the process for recovering the chair (which was so easy that I don&#8217;t know WHY I&#8217;ve never tried before! \u00a0We will be recovering the rest of the chairs in this room very, very soon!).<\/p>\n<p>So here goes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We unscrewed the seat from the wooden part of the chair and discovered it had been recovered before! \u00a0The girls got busy removing the tacks. \u00a0They had fun with this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2543T.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m planning to do a lot of sewing this year to help out with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshuashands.org\/Valiant_Warrior_Quilting.html\" target=\"_blank\">Valiant Warrior Quilting Project<\/a> I decided to add another layer of batting. \u00a0We added it over the original piece of beige fabric since that fabric was smooth &#8211; we threw out the bumpy and dirty green fabric. \u00a0Looking here it was an okay first try\u2026 next time I&#8217;d be more careful to stay closer to the edges of the underneath of the seat so it&#8217;s not so messy when the chair is flipped upside down.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2548T.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next we stapled the fabric once in the center of each side and worked our way outward with the staples until we had only the corners left unstapled. \u00a0We flipped it over once or twice to make sure we were keeping things smooth and even.<\/p>\n<p>After that we pulled the corners and used short nails to tack them down. \u00a0Actually, we reused the nails that we took out in step 1. \u00a0This was easiest done with 2 people. \u00a0That tiny hammer makes me laugh\u2026 great size for the girls\u2026 kinda funny next to our grown up hands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2561T.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oh &#8211; and did any of you mama&#8217;s notice the random rainbow loom band floating around our craft table up there? \u00a0How are those things EVERYWHERE??? lol \u00a0Now\u2026 I challenge you to find it one of the previous pics! \u00a0Did you notice it? \u00a0Where else can that little green rubber band be found? \u00a0It&#8217;s like &#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the pleat looked like close up. \u00a0Not perfect\u2026 but not bad for a first try. \u00a0We&#8217;re learning here as we go!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2552T.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then it&#8217;s back to kiddos and power tools. \u00a0YAY!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2620T.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And Voila!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_2644T.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It make me so happy to see this chair every day now. \u00a0It may not be perfect but from the top it looks perfect to me\u2026 and how many people are going to go flipping my chairs upside down really?? \u00a0So &#8211; if you have some chairs that need an update don&#8217;t wait!
