{"id":4686,"date":"2013-02-13T02:29:25","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T02:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/?p=4686"},"modified":"2013-02-13T02:30:10","modified_gmt":"2013-02-13T02:30:10","slug":"kids-crochet-easy-earwarmer-headbands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/kids-crochet-easy-earwarmer-headbands\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids Crochet: Easy Earwarmer Headbands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This project is one of the first my daughters did on their own. \u00a0With chunky weight yarn and a 8.00 mm hook it works up quickly (a plus with an 8-year-old beginner). \u00a0It\u2019s also an easy one they can make as a gift and it\u2019s one of the simplest and fastest for a beginner to complete. \u00a0Here, during Random Acts of Kindness week, I wanted to share the instructions for how we made ours so you could whip up a headband too if you&#8217;re looking for a crochet-inspired kindness idea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We actually stumbled into this project when one of my girls was making a scarf for her American Girl Doll and got bored before she finished it. \u00a0We realized that if she stopped where she was and attached the two ends it was just long enough to make a headband earwarmer. \u00a0She was thrilled and happy to show off her new fashion accessory!<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cpattern\u201d is more a set of guidelines than an actual pattern because depending on the yarn and hook size you choose as well as the person you\u2019re making it for (kiddie vs. grown up) you can make some easy and quick adjustments. \u00a0I\u2019ll talk about that at the end.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the exact instructions to make this one which fits my 8-year-old daughter\u2019s head nicely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ribbed Ear Warmer Headband<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-4688\" title=\"IMG_3631\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3631.jpg 870w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3631-290x300.jpg 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yarn: We used Serenity Chunky Weight from the Deborah Norville Collection in Red Ochre for this one. (The top headband in the box shown above).<\/p>\n<p>Hook Size: 8.00 mm (L)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Chain 8, turn<\/p>\n<p>Row 1: Working in back loop only sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (7), ch 1, turn<\/p>\n<p>Row 2 &#8211; 40: Working in back loop only sc in each sc across (7), ch1, turn<\/p>\n<p>Finishing: Matching the sc in row 40 to the stitches in the first row, join with a row of slip stitches. \u00a0Finish off. Weave in Ends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Crochet With Kids Tip<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0If your little crocheter has a short attention span (like mine did when they first started &#8211; and really still do) try a \u201cMommy and Me\u201d approach to this project. \u00a0She does 2 rows (so she gets practice with the ch 1, turn as well as counting and executing the sc across), then I do 2 rows. \u00a0This way she gets little breaks (and with the completion of each set of 2 rows there\u2019s the immediate gratification of a goal-accomplished) and she sees the project grow quickly with mommy\u2019s (or daddy\u2019s) help.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-4691\" title=\"IMG_3600\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3600.jpg 625w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3600-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What if you don\u2019t like the chunky look of the ribbed style? \u00a0Here\u2019s one that\u2019s a little smoother (See the blue headband at the bottom of the box on the left).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4689\" title=\"IMG_3625T\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3625T2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3625T2.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3625T2-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This one was made with Serenity Chunky Weight from the Deborah Norville Collection in Seven Seas.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the pattern above except instead of working in back loop only, work your sc in both loops.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>So&#8230; what if your little crochet enthusiast wants to make one for his\/her favorite grown-up? \u00a0Or maybe size it for a toddler sister or brother? \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>Easy to do (and a great way to introduce them to the idea that they need not follow a pattern).<\/p>\n<p>Simply determine how wide you want it to be to cover the ears and work that many chain stitches plus one (to turn).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-4690\" title=\"IMG_3604\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3604.jpg 585w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3604-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then start to crochet your rows. \u00a0When you think you\u2019re getting close to the size you need just hold it up to someone to try it out. \u00a0Need a few more rows?
