{"id":4477,"date":"2013-01-08T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/?p=4477"},"modified":"2013-01-08T15:53:14","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T15:53:14","slug":"teachable-moment-thank-you-cards-and-mail-sorting-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/teachable-moment-thank-you-cards-and-mail-sorting-machines\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachable Moment: Thank You Cards and Mail Sorting Machines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I love when plans expand to become learning experiences. \u00a0That\u2019s what happened last Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p>After we got home from our weekly piano lesson the girls were asking when movie night was going to begin. \u00a0I explained that before we launch into our weekly family movie we needed to write thank you cards for the wonderful gifts sent to us by our out-of-town relatives.<\/p>\n<p>The girls were happy to get started because they love to draw, don\u2019t mind writing (so long as it\u2019s short and sweet \ud83d\ude09 ) and they\u2019re really into \u201cmail\u201d these days. \u00a0We recently started some pen pal connections with distant cousins and they love to send and receive mail. \u00a0So they got started. \u00a0I ran upstairs to my office to check my own email while they created their art.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later the girls came up with their first completed thank you card and a fully-decorated envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Y-9zP4iQaa6Ng4OOvFBU1KissPiA-ttn0eJqYm0XqYHprKEUheiBu9_tpPeLmTAYB_VvDfhsut-c3iekDM1-Xl719VmVYaCYH4ly-ksDsViyIfAlv0ZK\" alt=\"\" width=\"579px;\" height=\"434px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First&#8230; I\u2019m quite impressed with the tree!<\/p>\n<p>But, I explained it would get stuck in the machines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMachines?\u201d they asked. \u00a0\u201cWhat Machines?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mail Sorters,\u201d I responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are machines to sort the mail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Woo Hoo! \u00a0Teachable Moment!! \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Off to Youtube where we watched several videos and they would have happily watched more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" dir=\"ltr\"><em>The one thing I will say is that you have to be careful on youtube with the commercials (which you can often click to skip) and the previews that come up on the right side. \u00a0Just be aware. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are two videos we watched:<\/p>\n<p>How the U.S. Postal Service Works by HowStuffWorks<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How the U.S. Postal Service Works\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KYFtalTNzKk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>How It\u2019s Made Mail by thatsmynamedude &#8211; The Discover \/ Science Channel\u2019s \u201cHow It\u2019s Made\u201d Mail episode.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xqoUn4g4elU<\/p>\n<p>The Discovery Channel episode shows a woman hand sorting mail destined for other countries. \u00a0I explained how at one point in time all mail had to be hand sorted. \u00a0They just said, \u201cWOAH!\u201d \u00a0Then we talked about how engineers invented machines to solve that problem and make things move faster.<\/p>\n<p>Then we got back to work on our letters. \u00a0After watching how the machines read the addresses the girls were very interested in addressing the envelopes themselves. \u00a0We had a fun teachable moment and got our thank you cards done. \u00a0Thought I\u2019d share in case anyone else out there is working on your post-holiday thank you cards as well. \u00a0No thank you cards to write? \u00a0How about finding an out-of-town friend or relative willing to be pen pals?<\/p>\n<p>Super fun!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love when plans expand to become learning experiences. \u00a0That\u2019s what happened last Friday evening.
