{"id":3951,"date":"2012-05-14T10:30:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T14:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/?p=3951"},"modified":"2013-07-02T11:50:48","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T15:50:48","slug":"its-strawberry-season-u-pick-at-wegmeyer-farms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/its-strawberry-season-u-pick-at-wegmeyer-farms\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Strawberry Season!  | U-pick at Wegmeyer Farms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Several times a year we visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wegmeyerfarms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wegmeyer Farms<\/a>, a fantastic local pick-your-own farm, both for the fresh goodness of the fruit and for the family experience. \u00a0The kids learn that food comes from the earth &#8211; and not just from a grocery store. \u00a0They delight in finding the biggest, ripest berries (as well as their favorite &#8220;mutant&#8221; berries with lots of funny bumps), and we go home for a yummy homemade brunch (this time topped with strawberries!).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3966\" title=\"Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-9\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-9.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-9-300x110.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few pictures I snapped during our visit this year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3954\" title=\"Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-2\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-2.jpg 617w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-2-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the things that made a huge impression on us compared to other u-pick farms we&#8217;ve frequented is how clean these fields are. \u00a0Take a look at the rows and the paths in between. \u00a0There are very few weeds and the paths are nice and clear. \u00a0It&#8217;s super-duper easy to reach all of the strawberry plants without any trouble and find just the perfect berries!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3960\" title=\"Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-8\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-8.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-8-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we first arrived we were greeted by the owner of the farm who gave us a bucket and assigned us a row. \u00a0Visitors are given a specific row to pick where the owners know there are still ripe strawberries available (so there is no worry that you&#8217;ll be aimlessly going down a row that&#8217;s been picked clean by someone before you). \u00a0When you are done picking you&#8217;re given a small red flag (see the center front of the photo above) to place in your row where you stopped. \u00a0This way the next picker knows exactly where to start.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"556\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The owner then explained to the children exactly how to find the ripe strawberries. \u00a0We wanted to look for those that didn&#8217;t have any yellow at all on them. \u00a0Those would be the sweetest!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This one had just a tiny bit of yellow at the tip &#8211; but it was a &#8220;mutant.&#8221; \u00a0The girls were thrilled to find the most unusual looking berries &#8211; constantly yelling out to one another with delight when they found a lumpy berry they thought was super cool!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Berries are $3.99 per pound. \u00a0The great thing though is that, unlike at the supermarket, you can be sure that there are NO rotten berries in your pound! \u00a0Don&#8217;t you just hate when you get home and have to trim away half the carton because they&#8217;re rotten? \u00a0Not with u-pick! \u00a0You get ALL that you pay for! \u00a0And you know they&#8217;re fresh!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wegmeyers_Farm_Strawberry_Upick_by_Catina_Anderson-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And&#8230;
