{"id":264,"date":"2010-08-12T02:29:34","date_gmt":"2010-08-12T06:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/?p=264"},"modified":"2013-07-02T12:24:40","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T16:24:40","slug":"calvert-marine-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/calvert-marine-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Calvert Marine Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I want to share a little about the <a title=\"Calvert Marine Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.calvertmarinemuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Calvert Marine Museum<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a bit of a drive from the Northern VA region so I&#8217;ll be making a new spot in the &#8220;Our Hometown&#8221; category for &#8220;within driving distance&#8221; because there are some great places surrounding the Metro region well worth the day trip, especially if you have kids. \u00a0<a title=\"Calvert Marine Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.calvertmarinemuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Calvert Marine Museum<\/a> located on Solomon&#8217;s Island in Maryland is one of those places!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-265\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-1\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1-300x133.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took our kids to visit the museum based on a recommendation from my husband&#8217;s mom after she took our niece and nephew there last year. \u00a0I was doing a fun photo scavenger hunt and needed a picture of a lighthouse. \u00a0They just happen to have an AWESOME lighthouse on the museum property. \u00a0Check it out!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-266\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-21\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-21.jpg 600w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-21-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lighthouse was open for the whole family to walk up and explore. \u00a0Inside the museum there were fantastic exhibits to keep the kids&#8217; interest. \u00a0There was a special room just for kids with a miniature lighthouse the kids could climb into, a sailboat they could pretend to captain, a tank full of live sea life (with a volunteer to talk to them about what they were seeing &#8211; who even let them touch a couple live animals), an area for arts and crafts and a cool spot where they could dig in the sand to find fossils. \u00a0Each child was allowed to take home one fossil. \u00a0I had as much fun digging as they did! \u00a0And each of them walked away with their very own shark&#8217;s tooth. \u00a0Actually, the experience led us to drive about 10 minutes to another bay-side park and go digging for more sharks teeth on our own before heading home!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately I didn&#8217;t take any pictures of the kids area that didn&#8217;t have my kids in them&#8230; but they have some good shots on their website if you want to see what the room looks like.<\/p>\n<p>Then there were rooms full of fossils. \u00a0There was a huge open tank with stingray. \u00a0 The most impressive may have been this new exhibit of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calvertmarinemuseum.com\/paleontology.htm\" target=\"_blank\">prehistoric MEGA shark<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-267\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-11\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"647\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-11.jpg 647w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-11-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I would not have wanted to happen upon THIS guy at the beach! \u00a0That&#8217;s for sure!<\/p>\n<p>There is also a series of aquariums featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calvertmarinemuseum.com\/estuarine.htm\">estuary life<\/a>. \u00a0My girls loved the jellyfish tank.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-268\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-1-27\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1-27.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1-27.jpg 720w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-1-27-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favorite part was outside. \u00a0There are a series of docks that run over very shallow water and marshland where you can see tons of creatures right in their own element.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-270\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-22-1\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-22-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-22-1.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-22-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spotted blue crabs, schools of fish, snails and this little guy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-269\" title=\"CalvertMarineMuseum-19\" src=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-19.jpg 900w, http:\/\/catinaanderson.com\/photography\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/CalvertMarineMuseum-19-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was my girls first time to see a fiddler crab&#8230; if you&#8217;ve never seen one they are quite small, but the male crabs have this large claw that makes them quite distinctive!
