US Marine Corps War Memorial – Arlington, VA

I have lived in the Washington D.C. Metro Area my entire life.  But, it wasn’t until this past August that I visited the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in person for the first time.  I’ve seen it from a distance but, surprisingly, had never seen it up close.

I’m astounded by this!

I’m completely bewildered when I think about how many years I’ve lived here and how many important monuments, memorials, museums and other sites I’ve yet to see.

And I know a lot of you are with me on this!

So many of us in this region just somehow don’t get out there to visit the places that people from outside our region dream their whole lives of coming to see.  It’s right here in our backyard and we just get busy… and we miss it!

I’ve made it somewhat of a mission to make sure that we, as a family, start visiting all the wonderful historical, natural and cultural sites this region has to offer. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you might remember this post where I talk about how passionate I am about getting my kids out there to visit the places they are learning about in their history books, to experience the nature they read about in science and to connect what they learn in school to the real world.

I haven’t been blogging about it as much as I would like to because, honestly, there is a LOT for me to learn.  I’ve been waiting to have it all figured out… a perfect, neat little package to present to the world.

…and I haven’t found perfect, or neat, or a package…

and so I haven’t found myself posting much of anything

Still, we have been visiting lots and lots of places over the past two years.

Realizing that perfect is maybe never going to happen, I’ve decided to go ahead and just start sharing photos and some of our experiences here on the blog in the days and weeks to come.  Some days it will be a simple photo share like today’s post.  Just a quick glimpse into what is out there – maybe a little inspiration that might prompt some of you to want to head over to google and learn a little more or jump in the car, grab your camera and go take some pictures.  Other days the posts will include more detailed discussion, tips or suggestions based on our experiences.

At any rate, no more waiting for myself to know everything and have it figured all out.  After all… I’d probably have to wait forever!

I’m taking the leap to share.  I’m a little bit nervous about it actually… so I would love to hear from you about what you like, what you find most interesting and what you want to see more of.  Thank you so much for that support!  And I hope you find something here in my little “home on the web” that is helpful or inspiring to you.  🙂

In addition I hope that you will share with me too!  I hope you’ll leave comments about your favorite sites to visit.  Let me know your favorite travel tips or secret treasures.  I’ll share what we learn and I hope you’ll share too.

Finally, after way too much chatter, I’m sure… here’s today’s picture share of the day:
