Inspired by Points of Light

Just posting a quick youtube video posted on youtube by the Points of Light Institute as inspiration for all of the families joining with us to do 52 acts of service or kindness in 2013.  I’ve been researching a lot this week for family-friendly service opportunities and came across the GenerationOn website which led me to the HandsOn Network where I found this video posted.  It’s called:

Five Presidents on the Power of Service – posted on YouTube by Points of Light Institute

“Service is a Spark to rekindle the spirit of democracy in an age of uncertainty.”  – Bill Clinton

“Serve your nation, beginning with your neighbor… building communities of service, and a nation of character.”  – George W. Bush

“I’ve learned the secret that so many other volunteers have learned.  You always get so much more out of the work that you have put in.”  – Jimmy Carter

If you want more information check out this blog post from the Points of Light titled 30 Blogs with Family Themed Volunteer Ideas.

One of the pages linked to is a page on the United Way website that gives reasons why you should volunteer as a family including that volunteering, “helps youth decide what they want to do with their life,” and “Volunteering helps children develop empathy…” and “children who volunteer are less likely to become involved in at-risk behaviors.”  Check out the entire list from the United Way HERE.
