Great Blue Heron

One of my daughters is getting glasses.  So twice in the past 2 weeks we’ve had the chance to swing by the dr. office which is situated next to a pond along a busy street.  As we drove in the first time we noticed a Great Blue Heron flying over the parking lot and land next to the pond.  When we investigated more we discovered not one, but 2 of these beautiful birds at the pond.  We watched them for a few minutes, snapped a couple pictures and left.  When we went back yesterday to pick up the glasses I took along my longer lens just in case they were still there.  Joyfully they were… only this time there were three!  It was freezing cold and there was another photographer taking photos so we only peeked about 2 minutes.  I had the chance to photograph one flyover of the pond and one swing around the parking lot before we were too numb to stay any longer on this cold, dreary, windy day.  When I got home I was thrilled to have captured this shot – just love the angle and position of the wings.  What a beautiful bird.

Beautiful shot! You need to enter it into a contest!! I live in MI and luckily get to see the blue heron quite often while camping on lakes but my biggest thrill was while in our boat going through a channel that connects 5 lakes to each other I saw this huge bird that looked like a giant hummingbird. I had never seen one before. When I got home I searched the web with what little info I had and no luck but on the Audibon(sp)forum I put up the description and a man emailed me and told me to look up green heron. Low and behold that is what I saw! They are common in MI but hang out in the swamps. I have not found anyone else that has seen one of these magnificent birds. You’ll have to google them and see what they look like if you haven’t seen one. I have no idea what they look like in flight. But the look like a giant hummingbird. LOL
